Beauty in Appearance and Hair Care

https://www.freepik.com/

What do People see when they see us?

We present ourselves through actions and attitude, or our presentation can be merely through our looks.  How important is appearances?

Question:  Are people so distracted by how we look, that they miss who we are?

What is “Outward appearance”?

According to definition:  Appearance is the look or outward aspect of a person or thing, an outward show; pretense to maintain an outward show of being proper, prosperous, etc…

[1Peter 3:3-4 NIV] 3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. 4 Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight.

According to this verse we are to be known for what?  The Spirit within.

There is nothing wrong with hairdos, nice jewelry, trendy clothing. But our styling should not be so distracting that people only remember us for what our hair is doing, or the clothing we wear.

Physical appearance is often an expression of the heart. Motives of the heart can be expressed in the style or modesty we choose.  When your heart attitude seeks that which is pleasing and glorifying to the Lord, not ourselves or the people we are trying to impress, we demonstrate in how we present ourselves.

[1Samuel 16:7 NIV] 7 But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."

So, what is a beautiful heart???

Inward appearance

[Proverbs 27:19 NIV] 19 As water reflects the face, so one's life reflects the heart.

[Ecclesiastes 3:11 NIV] 11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.

[Matthew 5:8 NIV] 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

[Luke 6:45 NIV] 45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.

Authentic beauty comes from within, from the core of a person, where Christ, the Holy Spirit, dwells!  Whatever is in your heart will determine what you say and how you look.  And God has unbelievable, unimaginable things in store for us, in our hearts, that we have not even tapped into yet, that is BEAUTIFUL!

(context; Paul first wrote to the men, then now he is addressing the women, so he did not single the women out only.)

[1Timothy 2:9-10 NIV] 9 I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, 10 but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.

Modest in appearance, and simple in attire, not drawing attention to yourself by hair style, or jewels, or clothing.  According to 1 Timothy chapter 2 verse 10 you are attractive by the good things you do.  Beautiful by what you do.  What you do will be determined by WHOSE you are.

Application:  Is your appearance (no matter the style) one that glorifies God and blesses others, or does it cause a distraction from people being able to see Christ in you?

The way we adorn ourselves expresses whose we are.

Do you belong to God or to the world?

What is in your heart and therefore expressed in your appearance?

God has created each one of us with a unique head of hair.

So, how do we care for it?

How often do we shampoo, condition, cut…?

There are many different types of hair, therefore there are many different requirements for the care, keeping and styling of hair.  Some may need to wash daily, while others require a much less frequent washing.  Some can use a bristly brush, while others can only use a comb when their hair is wet.  Your hairdresser is the best person to go to, to best understand what, when, how to maintain your hair.  For now, let us look at various hairstyles that are simple for the formal times, the casual times, and the in between times.

A few things to remember:

Everything takes practice.  From the care and maintaining, to the styling and accessorizing.  You will not get it perfect the first time, so practice, practice, practice.

Everyone is different.  What works for you may not work on your friend.

NEVER share hairbrushes, combs, etc. as bugs and bacteria pass rapidly through contact.

ALWAYS respect your parents.  They are your authority, and if they have a standard, Follow it! The Lord put it there for a reason for you to grow and respect.

A few tools of the trade:

- Shampoo: used to cleanse hair from oils and dirt.

- Conditioner: used to soften, moisturize, and detangle hair after cleansing with Shampoo.

- Moose:  often added to damp hair, prior to styling, so that hair can better hold the style effect, as well as add volume to hair.

- Gel: often applied to wet hair, to hold hair in place, or add volume to hair. Tends to dry stiff, and when brushed can flake.

- Hairspray:  often applied after styling to hold hair in the desired place.

- brush: the brush is to smooth out hair, detangle, and cleanse the hair.  There are many different types of brushes, and they are designed for various hair types and purposes.

- comb: the comb is to more gently smooth out hair and detangle, straighten hair, as well as useful for parting and separating sections of hair.

- pick: the pick helps to detangle and fluff hair.

- hair drier: helps to quicken the drying process.  To avoid burning the hair or your scalp, be sure to always be moving and use the right setting for the right type of hair and desired styling.

- iron: provides heat to style hair, adding curls, crimps, or making straight.

The most important thing: you be you.

Do what makes you - you … the best you ever. Which ultimately brings glory to the creator of you – God!

Imagine

~by Lynne Rienstra (used with permission)   Imagine a girl, a precious member of the body of Christ.  She possesses a saving knowledge of Christ and His work for her and a growing dependence on the Holy Spirit.    Imagine that this girl is able to study the Bible for herself, and therefore has a deepening relationship with her heavenly Father (regardless of what kind of earthly parenting she is receiving). Constantly in God’s word, she is learning, memorizing, and applying the promises He has made to her.  Like footsteps, those promises guide her faith walk each day.    Imagine that as others struggle to answer the question, “Who am I?” this girl already knows the true question is “Whose am I?”    Imagine this girl is sure of her value as an image-bearer of God and recipient of His grace, she is shielded from the self-destructive behaviors of her peers.    Imagine her more and more able to hear God’s voice. She is less...

Beauty and the Bubble Bath

Beauty and the Bubble Bath What is Beauty?  Where does it come from?  What makes a person beautiful?  Is it their appearance, their attitude, or both?  Think of someone that you think is truly beautiful.  What makes them beautiful?  Is it their hair, their skin, their perfect figure?  Or is it their heart, their caring and compassionate nature, their gentle and quiet spirit?  Man vs. God:   We are bombarded by voices everywhere, each one expressing an opinion about our worth or what we must do to be beautiful, to be accepted and to be loved.  (like the latest fashion magazines & beauty tends) Where else do some of these “voices” come from? How many of us are honest enough to say that we sometimes believe the lies that the voice of “man” tells us?  I know I have struggled with this! In Matthew 23:25 Jesus exchanged conversation with the Pharisees, the religious rulers of His time.  He accused them of shining the...

History - 2007

This was another eventful year! The Jaffrey Bible Church began their third year of meetings, directed by Sheryl Duncan. I again, had the blessing of teaching the devotional thoughts. This time the theme was "Beauty in Action" . For a visual theme we used jewels, bringing the truth alive about how we are a valuable treasure being cleaned, faceted, and set in a particular way to glorify our creator within the church body. The wellness highlights developed to focus on various careers and how the Lord brought the various women sharing, to the place they were at, and how the teens could get involved in ministry. These careers included teaching, clerical, homeless ministry, and many more. Two other very exciting things happened this year as well: In the Spring we saw the first ever teen girl conference, at Monadnock Bible Conference. What an exciting event with over 150 teen girls! The other was the first ever guys club ministry – Man Of God . Please continue to pray for Man of Go...
